Willie Joe Ligon, founder and lead singer of The Mighty Clouds of Joy of Los Angeles, passed away on December 11.

Friends and family of the legendary singer are mourning, but also celebrating successful life as a game-changing gospel singer and hope his path was an example that hard work pays off. For those inquiring, they’ve asked that he be honored by his “example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a story day think of Joe and get comfort in knowing that he is no longer in the storm.”

Alabama-raised and California-made, the quartet leader was part of one of the most successful gospel quartets in history with three Grammys under their belts. With a career spanning over 50 years, the group was most known for songs like “Mighty High,” “I Know I’ve Been Changed” and more.

Details on Joe Ligon’s death have yet to be released.
